More companies are turning to volunteerism, in lieu of the traditional off-site meetings and retreats, to get their employees motivated and working together as a team, according to the New York Times - and a discussion I had just this morning with a nonprofit client whose volunteer management staff is on the forefront of this trend. Volunteer projects are also seen by many employers as a key component of their leadership development efforts.
With the importance that young people entering the workforce today (as well as many of us who've been around awhile) place on seeking employers who demonstrate core values and ethics compatible with their own, volunteerism could also play a key role in employee attraction and retention.
