I have often joked about my decision to specialize in an area of HR that so many of my colleagues strongly dislike (confirmed a while back by my colleague Sharon Lauby's informal research on what HR wants to do). The joke, however, may eventually be on us as signs point to the risk of potential power shift in reward strategy and management - that is, moving away from HR to our friends in Finance - in response to our continued inability to deal effectively with the analytic and financial backbone of well crafted business rewards.
Which is why Seth Godin's post on fear, scarcity and value seemed to be offering a lesson custom-tailored for HR professionals that truly want to break out of the mold and add business value to their organizations.
The things we fear are probably feared by others, and when we avoid them, we're doing what others are doing as well.
Which is why there's a scarcity of whatever work we're avoiding.
And, of course, scarcity often creates value.
And so, my HR generalist friends: Is compensation the thing you fear most about HR work? While you may take comfort in knowing you aren't alone, it may be past time to set yourself apart by getting your reward game on and becoming schooled in the math necessary to manage that little business investment we call employee pay.
Just do it.
